At 1100 miles when I finished the break in process, I had around 90 PSI compression, both rotors and all faces, using a normal piston compression tester.

i had done a compression test on it again with a different guage, and it showed between 150-170 psi. so the guage i used must have been bad, or the valve in it, or wasnt the right type. i redid timing, and tuned the carb, and it runs like a bat out of hell, oh also put a 180*t stat in it, instead of the 160. aaronHello everyone! You all are great, answering my questions about current dilemmas and future plans. I just got a proper rotary compression tester and so I wanted to share my results. For context, I daily drive a 1991 S5 NA RX-7 with almost 130k miles on the original powertrain. I just ran a compression test and maxed out at 90 psi on almost all the cylinder. I had 2 that were only about 75. I don't believe this is high enough. It sounds like combustion doesn't happen until a minimum of 90. I did add some oil to each cylinder and tried again, had luck on a few, but still nothing higher than 90.
If your engine lacks power and/or has a poor idle, it is a good idea to perform a compression test in order to (hopefully) eliminate the possibility of a bad engine. To perform a compression test, all is needed is a standard compression test kit (available at most auto parts store) and a helper. The procedure is as follows:However, you will not see actual compression readings. Once you have confirmed three even bounces, you can repeat the test without depressing the relief valve to ascertain the compression reading. Diagnosis. 3 even bounces of 85 PSI or above is GOOD. Readings above 110 PSI is GREAT! Compression test- 90 psi Facebook; Twitter; Compression test- 90 psi. By draggins10 April 18, 2013 in Banshee Repairs and Mods. Share More sharing options. I got the following result on my compression test: 6.9/6.9/6.8 6.7/6.9/6.9 all at ~1100 feet above sea level at 250 RPM. Using a calculator, it puts them around 7.1 at sea level. Is this a good test? I have about 1 year left on my engine warranty.
Subject: Re: (rx7) Normal compression reading using a normal gauge. '93 shop manual differs from later year manuals. '93 states 7.0 kgf/cm2 minimum which is roughly 100 psi. 6.0 kgf/cm2 is the '94 shop manual stated minimum and is roughly 85 psi. Your 250 number is not psi but tested RPM. Rotary compression is very dependent on altitude andSome people do take a plug out of both housings for the test to increase cranking speed, especially when trying to test an engine that hasn't run in a while, or has a weak battery or starter, etc. IF your car had just run and driven to the parts store then your cranking speed would have been sufficient even with the other chamber's spark plug installed and would not have had any . 1st thing to ask is how many miles has the engine done as if its about the 60K mark its far more reasonable to expect the 90 psi figure than the 115 psi ( sorry to say) I'd say to do another compression test with a 'normal' gauge as while these cannot give 3 readings the final figure should still be the same as the one recorded on the posh 3 .

I have only driven the car about 15 times since then (only take it out in the sun) The car has had different sport suspension but i dont know what sort. Hello
General engine-specific test drive advice for the FD RX-7 includes hooking up a boost gauge to the intake manifold and have a passenger verify that the turbos are healthy. You’ll want to see no more than 10 psi until the mid-4000 mark, where it will drop briefly to 8 psi as the second turbocharger comes online, then return to 10 psi. Converting psi to a compression ratio directly is not straightforward, as it depends on various factors, including engine design and conditions. . 90-100 psi: 7:1: 100-110 psi: 8:1: 110-130 psi: 9:1: 120-140 psi: 10:1: 140-160 psi: 11:1: 160-180 psi: 12:1: 180-200 psi: FAQs. . I change the oil around 5 hrs using regular rotella 15-w40. The Compression test is a little bit off, specs call for 57 Psi @ 600 RPM and I am getting 65 psi with the engine cold and 84 psi with the engine hot. There is nothing out of the ordinary to cause higher compression readings. I did recheck 3 times hot and cold same readings every time. Welcome back! Low Engine Compression; Low Engine Compression Low compression is an issue the RX-8 suffers from more and more as the cars have aged to the point where their average mileage is quite high. It’s one of the main reasons that you might developed a hot start problem and can be extremely frustrating to deal with. – Another user reported a compression test result of 70 PSI on #4 and #6 cylinders, indicating low compression. – The symptoms of low engine compression in a 4.7L Dodge or Jeep vehicle include rough idle and decreased performance at highway speeds. . Is 90 psi a good compression? Hey guys, how're things? here's my issue, I've been looking for an fb for about 8 months. I'm 18 and am itching to buy a rotary because I want to learn about them, and since my parents bought an rx8 I've found an fb in sligo (I'm in Ireland) and had a look, its a gorgeous wine red colour (originally gold though) and has a 12a, 1982 with 70 ish thousand miles, body work . The workshop manual for the RX-8 states the “standard” compression as 120 PSI (8.5) at 250 RPM, and the minimum as 98.6 (6.9) PSI at 250 RPM. . very rarely you get an 8.0 bar but I suspect 90% of the cars driving around are in the high 6's to low 7 s . I was thinking of getting another compression test at the same specialist in a month .
Once you have a valid reading, record the cylinder number and PSI rating. Most gas engine’s compression should be between 125 and 175 PSI while a diesel will generally fall between 275 and 400 PSI. Remember to write down each of your findings. If one or more cylinders looks to be way off in PSI, you can re-run the test again just to check.
If your Stihl FS90R trimmer doesn't have much power or if it won't start, it may be necessary to test for compression. You can buy a compression tester at . Your compression test should be within 15 psi for all 8 cyllinders, and should be no lower that 120 - 130 psi. Anything lower than that means bad rings, large scratch in cyllinder wall, bad seal between the valve and seat like a burned valve, or poorly machined valve job, or maybe faulty head gasket, or warped head or block deck.
